Learn Macrame Knots: How to Tie a Square Knot

The square knot is one of the most commonly used knots.

It is often one of the first knots beginners learn.

It creates a balanced, textured pattern that can be used in everything from wall hangings to plant hangers and bags.

In this quick tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how to tie a square knot step-by-step.

Step 1

A minimum of 2 cord lengths are required for this knot. Fold two cord lengths in half to create four working cords.

Place on a wooden dowel for ease.

Step 2

You now have two inner filler cords and two outer working cords.

Take the left outer cord and create an “L” shape over the inner cords.

Step 3

Keeping hold of the cords in your left hand, use your right hand to bring the right outer cord over the left cord.

Step 4

Fold the right cord underneath the left cord, behind the inner cords and up through the loop.

Step 5

Gently pull to tighten all the way to the top. You now have half a square knot.

Step 6

Repeat the same process in reverse, starting with the right outer cord instead.

Unsure how much cord you need?

If you’re practising knots for the first time, figuring out cord lengths can feel surprisingly confusing at first.

I created a free macrame cord calculator to help you estimate how much cord you’ll need before starting your project, whether you’re simply practising knots or planning a larger design.

What can I make with a square knot?

Square knots are one of the most useful knots to learn in macrame and are often considered one of the main building blocks for creating more detailed designs.

They’re especially popular because they add structure, texture and stability while still being beginner-friendly to learn. This makes them ideal for projects that need a slightly stronger, more supportive feel such as wearable accessories, baskets and plant hangers.

When combined with other knots, square knots can also create beautiful repeating patterns and textured panels within larger decorative pieces like wall hangings and curtains.

Because they’re so versatile, some projects can even be created almost entirely using square knots - such as my beginner-friendly macrame tote bag tutorial.
