You don’t need to have a certain home style to incorporate boho decor into your home.

The nature of this relaxed, free-spirited style makes it incredibly versatile. It's an easy way to update your home that won't date because it’s unique to you.

Understanding key elements of this style involves bringing in soft textures, patterns and colours to your space. It will help you style any room in a way that's pleasing to you. I discovered this by filling my space with houseplants and cosy textures. Now I find it hard to leave that room.

So let’s walk through the key elements to this style to help transform your home into a tranquil haven. But first things first…

What does boho mean?

Boho is short for bohemian that’s taken from bohemianism which is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle.

Bohemianism was coined in the late 19th century due to the similarities between the Bohemians and the Romani. They were wanders that lived on the margins of society. Their culture was romanticised due to their non-traditional lifestyles.

The boho style is based on the lifestyle of bohemians and hippies and disengages itself from mainstream fashion. Boho fashion is romantic and flowy. It often includes vintage items and elements from many cultures. The colours and patterns are rich and vibrant. Clothing is usually long and loose with layers. It's frequently combined with bold, statement accessories.

Does the relaxed, festival look come to mind? It definitely does for me. The fringe detail and beautiful accessories gives me serious boho vibes.

What is boho home decor?

You can certainly take a guess on how this style translates into the home so easily. The boho home style is carefree, worldly and eclectic. It blends the old and new, well-lived look that expresses your own unique personality.

It’s the reason why I love this style so much. It allows me to curate the things I love most. My possessions, functional decor and surround myself with items that make me happy - all in one place.

Decorating and styling your home shouldn’t be about following trends. It should be about finding things that mean something to you that is worth putting on display.

It is, of course, great to find some inspiration on the way you want your space to look so you can truly make it your own.

So, here are 8 boho decorations ideas that you can incorporate into your home.

1. Wall Hangings

Woven wall hangings make a big statement.

You can find a variety of styles, colours and sizes in rich patterns and tones. Or even fabric wall hangings with tassel or fringe detail. They all add texture and depth to a room as well as adding hints of colour if it’s something your room is lacking in.

Macrame wall hangings make an ideal addition to a boho style room. They are handmade from cotton cord by tying different knots together into beautiful pieces of art. For a rustic boho look, they can be made with driftwood or on antlers from deer that have naturally shed theirs.

These features combined make it a perfect way to enhance the natural elements in your room. Whether you’re going for a nature inspired theme or keeping it neutral for a more boho chic look.

2. Coasters

It is definitely OK to have a decorative table accessory that is both practical and stylish.

Why? Because you are a thousand times more likely to use it, and when I say you, I mean your significant other!

This type of coaster makes a beautiful addition to your coffee table or bedside table. The soft fringe detail not only feels good, but also looks aesthetically pleasing. The perfect tray table decor.

Solid wood furniture can be expensive. So it's best to avoid those ghastly hot drink stains right from the beginning. This cute accessory can also enhance the warmth and cosiness in your room from its soft texture.

3. Placemats

The big version of those spiral coasters. These placemats are ideal for completing the set for an ultimate dining room table setup. Your guests won't be able to stop complimenting them.

They are also a great way of adding colour to a plain looking area. Or to enhance the bohemian vibes in an already colourful room. You can place them underneath vases and plant pots. Or combine the placemat in a centrepiece on your dining room table.

The design and size allows you to place them as they are - no styling required. This makes them perfect if you’ve recently moved into a newly refurbished flat. Their texture and colour will help liven up a clean, minimalist look.

4. Plant Hangers

No boho home is complete without some glorious houseplants!

The biggest reason is that you can add life to a corner as well as some much needed greenery to a clinical looking room.

It’s amazing the effect houseplants have on us.  They're not just for aesthetics but are beneficial for our health too. I could talk about the amazing benefits of houseplants all day, but I'll save that for next time!

If you’re new to houseplants though and you’re not sure which plants will suit your space and lifestyle - check out this blog here. I go into more detail on shade loving plants that are easy to care for.

Hanging your plants up is a clever way to display them by allowing you to style hard to reach areas. As well as freeing up floor and furniture space. If you’re inspired by indoor gardens and you’re thinking “I need to create the indoor jungle look right now!” then I’d recommend using tiered plant hangers.

Use both the double and triple macrame plants hangers to make room for more plants. Display them on a ceiling hook or on a curtain rod which will create levels. You can place your houseplants by the window and next to a chair. This will create the perfect, cosy reading nook.

Be careful though - you’ll never want to leave that spot!

5. Baskets

If you’re like me who likes to keep things all neat and organised or you need to keep a few items together. Then storage baskets will be your new best friend.

They’re ideal to use in a home office to keep all the small bits of stationary together. How many times have you misplaced your pen today? 3 times for me!

This macrame basket includes a handle so you can hang them up as well. I find hanging it up in the hallway or displaying it next to the front door is an ideal spot for storing house keys and face masks. As well as other small important things that act as a reminder to bring with me as I leave the house.

The small aesthetics of the basket makes it a very cute end table accessory. This further adds to a beautiful bohemian living room.

I also find using it for storing some delicious chocolates equally convenient. Because we all need a treat now and again don't we?

6. Ceiling Light Shades

Lets not forget about ceiling decor. That’s right, you can add texture to the ceiling to really make that room stand out. It can act as a statement feature and a focal point if you are planning to keep the rest of the room simple.

The size of this macrame light shade makes it ideal to use in small spaces such as landing areas, hallways or utility rooms.

You can even combine it with other bohemian decorations to create a neutral boho nursery. The extra bit of texture will fit in beautifully alongside the soft toys. Speaking of nurseries, this brings me onto…

7. Baby Mobiles

A nursery doesn’t seem complete without a beautiful boho rainbow. They're perfect for a gender neutral nursery but the colours can be customised to your liking too. They also make a gorgeous baby shower gift for a new mum to be.

At the moment, these baby mobiles are only made to order. So if you’re looking for custom colours send us a message here.

boho macrame curtain

8. Curtains

Macrame curtains are so versatile because they can be featured in your home in lots of different ways.

They are designed for style so you won't be able to use them for privacy. But they still let lots of light through if you use them as a  window cover up. Display them in front of windows that don’t need curtains but just need some texture. You will no longer feel like they are missing something.

They’re great to use in outdoor spaces such as summer houses or outdoor toilets. Or you can even use them as campervan decor. Display them across small windows or against the doorframe.

These curtains are also perfect for open plan spaces. Particularly if you live in a flat/apartment as they make stunning room dividers. This way you can combine boho style textures but still keep the modern minimalist look.

A recent curtain design I made (as seen in the photo) was used for a large open shelf unit. My customer needed this furniture covering up but still needed easy access to it. It completely transformed the room.

9. Keychains

OK, you got me! They’re not decorations. But hear me out.

I had a customer who requested a bespoke wall hanging and also wanted a macrame keychain which was in a different colour. She said she needed a little bit of colour to brighten up the room. This was provided from the keychain with the keys remaining in the lock for internal doors. It's such an easy way to add colour without even realising it.

It was a fantastic idea and now I use that trick too. Even if you do store your keys in a bowl by the front door, it still adds a pop of colour from afar.

It’s a beautiful tassel design that keeps in line with the boho style. So even if you strive to create a boho home you can still extend it into your lifestyle in the form of boho accessories.

Living Room

Sticking to a green theme through plants and textures. Soft patterned pillows make a great addition to a boho living room . Try adding cosy blankets and fluffy rugs to complete the look. As well as textured wall art to display above the sofa.

Bedroom

For a boho master bedroom, I like to go all out with greenery. It’s important to make this space as relaxing as possible to ensure winding down before bed is as easy as it can be. Getting the right amount of sleep will set you off to a good start the next day.

If you have a canopy bed, you could try using plant hangers along the frame. If waking up in the morning surrounded by plants is your thing, then give that a go.

For guest bedrooms that need a cleaner look, I'd recommend using a larger wall hanging over the bed. This can double up as a hanging headboard. It will fill the majority of the wall so you don’t have to worry about styling that section.

Plus, your guests won't be able to stop staring at it!

Bathroom

I love to get creative in bathrooms, especially when it comes to decorating with plants.

Instead of having plants hanging from the ceiling, you could use a wall hanging planter. Fill your bathroom walls full of plants to create your own rainforest home spa.

This is really handy if you have a small bathroom or an ensuite room. It’s a fantastic space saving hack if you're limited on furniture and floor space.

Utility Room

A utility room definitely does not need to be boring. It can get quite hectic in there with all the cleaning and organising going on. So keep it simple with some hanging plants in the corner and small wall art pieces to liven up those plain walls.

Conservatory

A perfect place for creating an indoor jungle. Just be wary of which plants you place in there as it can get a LOT of light.

I used voile curtains and fairy lights to enhance the cosiness. Then added a bright patterned rug for some extra bohemian vibes

Garden

Let’s not forget about the outside. You can always add colourful accessories. This works well if your garden doesn’t have any flowers or plants yet. It's an instant colour pop instead of waiting for the spring blooms to arrive.

Display plant hangers on pergolas and outside of summer sheds. Or even on front porches and tree branches... the list goes on.

Any place that can handle the weight of the plant and pot.

Now go plan your boho room of dreams!

Close your eyes and picture what you want your room to look like and if it helps, try recreating that in a mood board. That usually helps me with colour schemes and specific decorations I want in there.

A bohemian home doesn’t have to feel cluttered, or too colourful or not colourful at all. It’s a style that’s yours to experiment with. So enjoy the creative journey!
