10 Must Have Houseplants to Create a Jungle Spa Bathroom.

The feeling you get when you step into the warm bathtub or into a hot shower.

You look around to see that you're surrounded by stunning houseplants. Now that is one of the best feelings.

Having the ability to create that relaxing indoor jungle spa experience is what everyone truly deserves after a long hard day at work.

Bathrooms were one of the first places in the house that I thought about displaying my first houseplant in. Turns out, the bathroom in my rented house did not get much light at all. Even though the humidity levels were relatively high.

It took a lot of moving around and trial and error for some of my plants to start thriving and become happy houseplants. But that’s OK. As a plant parent, that’s the norm. It can turn into a fun task of styling different rooms with some gorgeous greenery. Even during season changes, houseplants may need to be repositioned into a different spot.

You don’t need a modern bathroom or a complete bathroom makeover to get the look. The plants do most of the work and have the power to transform a space.

So, let’s take a look into those bathroom worthy houseplants.

  1. String of Bananas

A hanging plant that’s going to be your new favourite. I’m sure you can guess where it gets its name from. This low maintenance, trailing succulent will thrive in a south facing bathroom. When placed up high it will have the opportunity to reach lengths of 90cm (36”).

When displayed against the wall, it can certainly make an impact in your bathroom. Since you don’t have to water it as often as you think (let the soil mostly dry out) it's incredibly easy to care for.

Set this one on a shelf, on top of a cabinet or use a plant hanger to hang it against the wall or ceiling.

Anthurium Clarinervium

2. Anthurium Clarinervium

You and your guests won't be able to stop staring at this one. The striking heart shaped leaves are absolutely stunning. Be sure to place it in a brightly lit spot away from direct sunlight.

Constant humidity fluctuations may result in poor growth and yellow lower leaves. So, a guest bathroom/downstairs toilet with lots of light may be a good option for it.

3. Golden Pothos

This is where the indoor jungle look can start to develop. It's a trailing houseplant that can climb. Try using plant clips dotted along the shower which will allow it to climb against the shower door frame.

Combine this with some eucalyptus attached to the inside of the shower and you’ve got yourself a relaxing spa experience. The golden pothos is easy to care for and a fast grower, so you’ll achieve the desired look in no time at all.

Plus, they typically do well in lower light spots which is ideal for bathrooms with smaller sized windows that don’t receive too much light.

4. Fern

Ferns are great for placing on the sides of bathtubs, windowsills or on top of cabinets/shelves. Depending on the size, you can place small ones on top of the toilet tank.

They’re used to growing in dappled light in the wild, so you don’t have to worry about them being right next to the window. As long as your bathroom gets a decent amount of light, it should be fine to experiment with many corners of the bathroom.

5. String of Hearts

If it’s possible to get a ceiling hook in your bathroom then this one would be a beautiful choice for that area.

This houseplant is a gorgeous trailing succulent with heart shaped leaves and stems that can grow to about 3 metres long. So, hanging it up will certainly get the most out of it and allow proper room for it to grow.

Ensure it’s in a bright spot and it will thank you with its purple-toned heart stems.

6. Tradescantia

If you’re looking for a fast growing easy to care for trailing plant then this one's for you. There are lots of different varieties for you to choose from. The most common being Tradescantia Zebrina.

Place this one in a bright spot to ensure the colours and variation don’t fade. The growth can slow down and become leggy. If that happens, remove that stem and place it in a brighter spot.

7. Succulents

These types of plants make the cutest little houseplants. They’re perfect for gifting as well. They’re easy to water as they like to dry out before their next drink. This makes them wonderful for small space bathrooms. Perhaps a downstairs toilet near the window? They love bright light so if that’s the case make sure its a west/south facing room.

If you’re also unsure on which one to go for as there are so many different varieties, get a few! Form a collection and have them dotted around the bathroom. They fit beautifully in a modern bathroom if you’re not a fan of going overboard on the plants.

8. Rubber Plant

Using tall vertical plants is a great way to fill up an empty bathroom corner space. It’s just what you need when the bathroom makeover is complete but you feel like there’s something missing.

The rubber plant grows tall fast and can grow up to 15m high. Lot’s of indirect light is required, but avoid super sunny windows to avoid sunburn.

Having a mix of small, large and hanging plants can transform your bathroom space even if it’s not yours to renovate.

9. Monstera

Another one to fill out a large bathroom space with. It grows quickly and those leaves can get BIG.

This is a houseplant that will provide maximum impact to a space without requiring much effort on your part.

Super easy to care for and absolutely gorgeous to look at. Getting ready in the bathroom will feel so much more delightful with one of these beauties in there.

10. Neon Pothos

Last but not least… the neon pothos. Another pothos? Yes, because they’re easy to care for. I went for this one because of the beautiful, bright green leaves. It’s a lovely change to the darker green colour you see in most common houseplants.

The vines can grow up to 3 metres long so this is another one you can use to make the most of out those hard to reach areas.

There you have it - 10 glorious houseplants.

Now it’s time to create your dream indoor jungle spa bathroom. There are many more houseplants out there that can handle the heat and humidity fluctuations of a bathroom, but these 10 are a fantastic start.
